Vacancy for Chair of Trade and Copyright Committee

Chair of Trade & Copyright – job description

IAML (UK & Irl) is seeking a new Chair for its Trade & Copyright Committee. The appointment is for a three-year term commencing April 2022.

The remit of the committee is to advise the Branch on issues relating to intellectual property, particularly copyright and licensing, as they affect the music library profession, and to deal with issues relating to the profession’s relationship with publishers and suppliers of music material.

Whilst the role does require a reasonable grasp of copyright legislation on commencement, there is considerable opportunity to further develop this “on the job”.

The principal duties of the Chair are:

  • To chair Trade & Copyright Committee meetings (either fully virtual or hybrid) twice a year.
  • To coordinate IAML (UK & Irl) responses to public copyright policy consultations issued in the UK and Ireland.
  • To represent – or ensure representation of – IAML (UK & Irl) in stakeholder focus groups relating to the remit of the committee.
  • To ensure developments in the fields of trade and copyright are communicated to the music library community via vehicles such as articles, blog posts and guidance documents.
  • To oversee the content on the copyright pages of the Branch website
  • To lead on the delivery of the aspects of the Branch’s Strategic Plan falling within the committee’s remit and solicit feedback from members to help guide the committee’s priorities.
  • To build and maintain relationships with other stakeholder organisations.
  • To contribute to the Branch Annual Report.
  • To serve as a member of the IAML (UK & Irl) Executive Committee, which meets three times a year – two virtual meetings and one in-person meeting at the British Library.
  • To serve as IAML (UK & Irl)’s representative on the Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance, which meets three to four times per year – currently virtually but likely to move to a pattern of alternating virtual and physical meetings. NB If the incoming Chair felt unable to take on this aspect, it could be delegated to another committee member.

Travel costs for attendance at committee meetings are reimbursed by the Treasurer on production of receipts.

The current Chair, Claire Kidwell, will be happy to receive any informal enquiries about the role from potential candidates.

To apply, or to seek further information, please contact the Chair of Trade & Copyright, the President, or the General Secretary by 14th March 2022.
